#UncoverYourPotential Police Campaign

Third year students Isobel Barnsley, Shakela Brown and Petra Sobotkova took up the exciting challenge to work with the West Midlands and Warwickshire Police Forces to design and a produce a campaign to promote equality within the Force by challenging the unconscious bias regarding the stereotyping of certain gender roles. Working closely with Helen Holmes, their Lecturer for the Industry Brief module, and supported by Associate Lecturer Steve Waldron, they filmed and photographed at numerous locations throughout West Mercia and Warwickshire. The project was to become #UncoverYourPotential which grew faster and travelled further than they ever could have imagined, being seen at a UN Conference in London and Washington DC, and featuring on Radio 4’s Women’s Hour.

The project was inspired by DCI Liz Warner, who saw a tweet from a young girl called Esme, who wished that she could be a firefighter, but that she knew she couldn’t because she is a girl. West Midlands Fire responded with a short video showing multiple female firefighters. The video then went viral spreading to over 2 million people in 3 days.

The #UncoverYourPotential campaign consists of a video for each Force, a series of printed posters, a series of digital gifs, together with materials taken out to schools such as colouring sheets, wordsearches and certificates.

I am so proud to have worked on this project, it has been a real highlight of my time at the University of Worcester. The Police welcomed us as part of their family, making us feel so welcome even when we were asking them to take their make up off, smile, look serious, get in the car, get out of the car, hat on, hat off etc! The students worked so hard and I hope this project gives them a kick-start to a successful career.
